The hp9000/300 series was state of the art in workstations a few years ago, and they are now pretty cheap to obtain, and still have the capabilities that they did when they were made. I got a hp9000/345 with 19"monitor for $175, and it can run X windows, has a network interface, and the operating system for it was free with source code! I actually use this machine more than my 90mhz pentium pc.
